ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line

). Platforms utilizing DMTflex-enabled chipsets will cost-effectively support plug-and-play G.lite, full-rate ADSL or VDSL service.

Michael Tzannes, president and chief executive officer of Aware said: "Our DMTflex technology enables silicon suppliers to offer 16 ports of G.lite, eight ports of full rate ADSL, or one port of VDSL on a single chipset. This flexibility enables VDSL to come down the cost/volume curve rapidly by capitalizing on ADSL's mass-market success. This means that DMTflex-enabled VDSL solutions can be offered more cost-effectively than VDSL-only solutions."

"For telecommunication carriers to successfully compete for bundled services, the cost of deploying VDSL solutions needs to reach consumer price points," said Matt Davis, senior analyst for Yankee Group. "Aware's DMTflex technology solution puts silicon suppliers in a better position to reach this goal."

VDSL is a technology that further expands the achievable data rate on telephone lines by providing data transmission speeds of 20-50 Mbps at distances up to three thousand feet. As a result, VDSL provides telephone companies the necessary technology to compete for bundled video, voice and data services over a single twisted pair telephone line. VDSL standardization efforts are underway at ANSI (American National Standards Institute, New York, www.ansi.org) A membership organization founded in 1918 that coordinates the development of U.S. voluntary national standards in both the private and public sectors. It is the U.S. member body to ISO and IEC.  T1E1 as well as the United Nations' International Telecommunications Union See ITU.

(body, standard) International Telecommunications Union - (ITU) ITU-T, the telecommunication standardisation sector of ITU, is responsible for making technical recommendations about telephone and data (including fax) communications systems for PTTs and suppliers.
.

Commenting further, Tzannes added: "As a leading innovator in DSL technology, we are committed to investing in new technologies that bring value to consumers. In the near-term, DMTflex breaks through cost-barriers associated with VDSL. In the long term, it unifies the consumer DSL industry with a common DMT See DSL.  technology."

Aware's DMTflex technology is based upon standard compliant, interoperable, mass-deployed technology. Aware's DMTflex technology package includes system simulations, application specific integrated circuit (ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "a-sick." A chip that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose chip such as a microprocessor. ) cores, run-time software and reference designs.
