Victor Lavalle's debut novel, The Ecstatic (Crown), was chosen as one of five finalists for the prestigious PEN/Faulkner Fiction Prize. It is the largest American fiction prize ($15,000 to the winner) and the only one voted on by fellow writers. Wideman grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA and much of his writing is set there, especially in the Homewood neighborhood of the East End.
