The awards began in 1990, and are shown live on ITV, in December.  with four titles, including one for its star and creator Caroline Aherne Caroline Aherne (born 24 December 1963 in Ealing, London) [1] is an English comedian, writer and actress best known for her award winning creations Mrs Merton and The Royle Family. Aherne was raised in Wythenshawe, Manchester. , who was named best actress.

Her colleague Ricky Tomlinson Ricky Tomlinson (born 26 September 1939 in Bispham, Blackpool) is an English actor. Early life
Tomlinson was born Eric Tomlinson in Blackpool and has lived in Liverpool most of his life.
 was named best actor and the programme was named top sitcom at the ceremony.

Other major winners were Paul Merton, who was named best entertainment personality, while Sacha Baron-Cohen, Channel 4's Ali G, was best male newcomer.

Jessica Stevenson - another star from The Royle Family, who also appeared in Channel 4's Spaced - took the female newcomer award.

Victoria Wood's BBC1 show dinnerladies was named best new TV comedy at the star-studded ceremony. Cold Feet took the title for best comedy drama.
