Award-winning magalog brings in 70,000 subscriptions.

This year's winner of The Newsletter on Newsletters Newsletter Promotion Awards competition is a 24-page magalog which is a riot of color not of the white race; - commonly meaning, esp. in the United States, of negro blood, pure or mixed.

and graphics and photos and boldface lists of dozens of ways to improve your health.

It was designed to promote subscriptions to Soundview Publications' Second Opinion newsletter, edited by William Campbell William Campbell or Bill Campbell may refer to: Politicians
  • Bill Campbell (California politician) (b. 1942), the California State Assembly Republican Leader from 2000–2001 and the Chairman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors from 2005–2007.
 Douglass, M.D.

Its copy pulls no punches. It relies on a copywriter's proven buzz words: Startling star·tle
v. star·tled, star·tling, star·tles

v.tr.
1. To cause to make a quick involuntary movement or start.

2. To alarm, frighten, or surprise suddenly. See Synonyms at frighten.
, Breakthroughs, Discoveries, Astonishing a·ston·ish
tr.v. as·ton·ished, as·ton·ish·ing, as·ton·ish·es
To fill with sudden wonder or amazement. See Synonyms at surprise.
, Victory, No More Pain!, Powerful (used in four headlines), Amazing, The Easiest Way, Simple Cure, Infection-Proof, and Secrets.

Plus, it features headlines as large as 60-pt. type--heads with all the subtlety of "Dr. Douglass, I'm Finally Cured!" and "Second Opinion Saved My Life!"

Dr. Douglass's photo appears no fewer than ten times, once even among his AIDS patients in Uganda. And while the premiums offered subscribers are referred to at the end of a number of articles, the actual name of the newsletter doesn't appear until p. 18. Obviously, the magalog is selling Dr. Douglass first and the premiums second--and of course the newsletter in order to get both Dr. Douglass and his FREE GIFTS!

It's an information-packed mailing, with articles on everything from allergies to thyroid cures--not to mention fighting cancer, losing weight, prostate problems, "Victory Over Heart Disease," "Grandma Bell's Sunburn sunburn, inflammation of the skin caused by actinic rays from the sun or artificial sources. Moderate exposure to ultraviolet radiation is followed by a red blush, but severe exposure may result in blisters, pain, and constitutional symptoms.  Reliever," and "Better Eyesight--Without Glasses, Contact Lenses contact lenses contact nplverres mpl de contact

, or Surgery!"

By the time the reader has gotten to the order form on p. 23, he is prepared to get help on all of these health matters through Dr. Douglass' six premium books. It's a hard offer, payment to be sent with order: five premiums for a two-year subscription at $77, plus a sixth premium for ordering within 11 days; and "2 free gifts" with a one-year subscription at $39.

The use of a rules engine (BRE) requires placing the company rules in an external repository that can be easily reviewed rather than  is stapled into the center spread.

Soundview Publications vice president Garret Wood told NL/NL, "When we hired Rob Davis This article is about British musician Rob Davis. For the politician from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, see Rob Davis (Ontario politician). For the American Football player see Rob Davis (football player). For other uses, see Rob Davis (disambiguation).  to design this Parris Lampropoulos--written package for Second Opinion, we told him we wanted something fresh and different. What he gave us did that in spades. The cover art spurred debate in our office over just what it was. Finally, the package became known as 'Exploding Kiwi.'"

Garret continued, "Packed with good news and healing secrets, this modem-looking magalog really grabbed attention--and subscribers!

"Our objective was to prove a control package we could mail in the millions. We first started mailing this package in June 1999. Since that mailing, it's remained our control. Through August 2000, we've mailed over 5,750,000 pieces that have brought in over 70,000 subscribers"--and a Gold Award, to boot.
