Business Editors & High-Tech Writers

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 13, 2001

Kofax today shipped Version 2.0 of its award-winning Software VirtualReScan (SVRS SVRS Statewide Voter Registration System (Indiana)
SVRS Statistically Valid Random Sample
SVRS Shrouded Ventilated Rotary Sander (construction)

) automated document image perfecting solution.

The new version now supports the popular TWAIN (Technology Without An Interesting Name) A programming interface that lets a graphics application, such as an image editing program or desktop publishing program, activate a scanner, frame grabber or other image-capturing device.  and ISIS standards for communications between scanners and a wide range of software applications. Kofax has also greatly expanded the number of workgroup and departmental scanners which have been certified for SVRS.

SVRS 2.0 won Transform Magazine's "Best of Show" award at AIIM (Association for Information and Image Management International, Silver Spring, MD, www.aiim.org) A membership organization founded in 1943 devoted to creating industry standards and disseminating information about the document management industry.  2001 for its unparalleled document image quality without user intervention. It is also a finalist for the magazine's "Product of the Year" competition. Winners will be announced later this month.

With VRS (Video Relay Service) A communications service for the hearing or speech impaired. A VRS is the video counterpart of a TTY relay service, in which the user types on a terminal, and the relay operator speaks the messages to the recipient (see TDD/TTY). , anyone can load any combination of document types and sizes into the scanner and simply press the scan button. SVRS will automatically straighten, crop and optimize exposure in real time.

A just-released white paper from Doculabs, an independent analyst firm, has also confirmed in lab tests that VRS reduces the time needed to prepare documents for scanning, increases optical character recognition optical character recognition (OCR), method for the machine-reading of typeset, typed, and, in some cases, hand-printed letters, numbers, and symbols using optical sensing and a computer.  (OCR OCR

) accuracy by more than 30 percent and eliminates expensive, time-consuming document rescanning. Read it at www.kofax.com/learning/whitepapers/.

Now Version 2.0 gives TWAIN and ISIS-compliant OCR applications such as Adobe Acrobat Document exchange software from Adobe that allows documents to be displayed and printed the same on every computer. The Acrobat system created the Portable Document Format (PDF), which is widely used in commercial printing and on the Web. "Like the original VRS, SVRS 2.0 produces perfect images on the first try, without being a scanning expert," said Kofax Director of Marketing J.D. Moons. "This makes it a good fit for remote, distributed, scanning operations where employees add scanning to their other duties."

Multi-part forms such as shipping airbills, or any documents that are difficult to scan effectively, benefit most from VRS. A comparison of such documents scanned with and without VRS clearly shows that VRS scans are easier to read than non-VRS images. Examples may be viewed at www.kofax.com/products/virtualrescan/.
