Award-Winning MotoDV from Radius Announced for Windows 95; Full-Motion Transfer Solution Ensures Highest Quality Transmission of Video Between DV Camcorder and Computer.

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 7, 1998--MotoDV, Radius Inc.'s (NASDAQ NASDAQ

This new platform support takes Radius another step closer to providing Windows users with the same high quality, lower cost DV editing solutions that Macintosh users have come to expect.

MotoDV enables users to quickly and reliably transfer pristine digital video between a Windows-based personal computer and a DV camcorder or VTR (VideoTape Recorder) A videotape recording and playback machine. VTR may refer to consumer MiniDV and DV recorders or to professional machines such as Betacam, DVCPRO and DVCAM.  equipped with a DV FireWire port (IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  1394 standard). Just as the availability of desktop publishing desktop publishing, system for producing printed materials that consists of a personal computer or computer workstation, a high-resolution printer (usually a laser printer), and a computer program that allows the user to select from a variety of type fonts and sizes,  products transformed the graphic production industry, products like MotoDV, along with other Radius DV products, are today transforming the video production industry -- lowering the cost of entry and accessibility for sophisticated video post-production.

MotoDV automatically converts DV clips into QuickTime 3.0 movies that can be imported into virtually any QuickTime application. Designed as a companion product, MotoDV supports QuickTime-compatible editing software and includes direct plug-in support for Adobe Premiere.

"Radius led the market in April 1997 by being the first company to ship a FireWire product for Mac OS computers," said Joe Klingler, vice president of video engineering for Radius. "Later, MotoDV became the first product in its class to offer support for both NTSC (National TV Standards Committee) The committee that developed the television standards for the U.S, which are also used in Canada, Japan, South Korea and several Central and South American countries. Both the committee and the standard are called "NTSC.  and PAL DV devices. Most recently, Radius again led the market by being the first licensee to ship products with QuickTime version 3.0. We are proud to bring these pioneering products and standards to the Windows platform."

MotoDV consists of three primary components: video deck control and capture, the Radius SoftDV software codec A compression/decompression routine that is implemented in software only without requiring specialized DSP hardware. See codec.  (compression/decompression), and the Radius DVPlayer (video playback/recording). The video capture feature transfers the digital DV data stream from a camcorder to a user's hard disk.

As clips are being captured, they are automatically converted to QuickTime movies -- complete with a separate audio track. The digital transfer maintains the original quality -- no information is lost. High image quality is maintained and clips may be reliably captured as either real-time or time-lapse movies.

The capture application includes the same handy deck controls included with other Radius DV products, such as seek to clip, fast forward, step-frame, etc., making it easy to locate and name the clips users want to capture.

SoftDV is a high-performance software-based codec (1) (enCOder/DECoder) A hardware circuit that performs analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) and digital-to-analog (DAC) conversion. When analog signals are entered into a computer, cellphone or other device via a microphone or video source such as VHS tape or analog TV,  that renders video to the DV format. SoftDV has several advantages over traditional hardware-based codecs The following is a list of codecs. Audio codecs
Non-compression formats
  • Audio Interchange File Format (AIFF, container format)
  • Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF, container format)
.

One, it is significantly less expensive. It is also scalable in that video can be viewed in a number of different resolutions in DV format, depending on the power of the desktop machine. It will take advantage of any increase in computer processor speed resulting in a decrease in rendering time and improvement in software playback. SoftDV allows users to play back clips on their computer and use any QuickTime application for editing and rendering.

The MotoDV Radius DV Player enables users to play back DV streams at full size and in full motion with accurate audio synchronization (1) See synchronous and synchronous transmission.

(2) Ensuring that two sets of data are always the same. See data synchronization.

(3) Keeping time-of-day clocks in two devices set to the same time. See NTP.
, recording them to DV cassette tapes if desired. This feature takes advantage of the DV circuitry built into camcorders and tape decks: the IEEE 1394 interface. The DV Player may be used either as a standalone application or from within Adobe Premiere as an export plug-in.

"MotoDV brings the full power of DV to Windows. Not only is it exceptionally easy to use and install, it supports a wide variety of DV camcorders and most of the popular editing systems used today -- including the recently announced Adobe Premiere 5.0," said Klingler. "It's the key to turning your DV camcorder into a video production studio."

Radius MotoDV ships with capture and playback software, a Radius 1394 FireWire host adapter Also called a "controller" or "host bus adapter," it is a device that connects one or more peripheral units to a computer. It is typically an expansion card that plugs into the bus. IDE and SCSI are examples of peripheral interfaces that call their controllers host adapters. See host.  card and cable (6-pin to 4-pin), and a user guide. It will be priced comparably to the Macintosh version at a suggested retail price of $499. The product is expected to ship in June. As a special offer, PhotoDV for Windows owners can purchase MotoDV for Windows for $99 through June 30.
