 has proven to be well worth it for Aboriginal film maker Shirley Cheechoo. The accomplished actress, playwright and visual artist received the International Director Award during a ceremony at the Windsong Film Festival held on Victoria Day weekend. Festival director Michael Floyd made the presentation at the third annual event.

The founder of the Weengushk Film Institute was honored for her third documentary entitled Mother Earth (Pikutiskwaau), a film commissioned by the Cree School Board of James Bay James Bay, shallow southern arm of Hudson Bay, c.300 mi (480 km) long and 140 mi (230 km) wide, E central Canada, in Nunavut Territory between Ont. and Que. Numerous rivers flow into the bay; many of these have been developed for hydroelectric power in Quebec (see .

From her first visit to the festival, Cheechoo gained a favorable impression of the American gathering. "My documentary was well received by the audience," she reported. "The whole piece was very moving for people; the people were crying at the ending."

The movie project was emotionally charged for Cheechoo as well. "I did most of my crying while I was editing it," she confided.

The next step in her professional development will take place this summer. She will be attending the Norman Jewison Noun 1. Norman Jewison - Canadian filmmaker (born in 1926)
Jewison
 Canadian Film Centre in Toronto. From July to December she will be honing her craft in preparation for the film version of her play Moose River Crossing.
