The accomplished actress, playwright and visual artist received the International Director Award during a ceremony at the Windsong Film Festival held on Victoria Day weekend. Festival director Michael Floyd made the presentation at the third annual event. The founder of the Weengushk Film Institute was honored for her third documentary entitled Mother Earth (Pikutiskwaau), a film commissioned by the Cree School Board of James Bay James Bay, shallow southern arm of Hudson Bay, c.300 mi (480 km) long and 140 mi (230 km) wide, E central Canada, in Nunavut Territory between Ont. and Que. Numerous rivers flow into the bay; many of these have been developed for hydroelectric power in Quebec (see . From her first visit to the festival, Cheechoo gained a favorable impression of the American gathering. "My documentary was well received by the audience," she reported.
