Award is sign of the times for city's creative types; Letterpool has focused on unsung design.Byline: ALISTAIR HOUGHTON THE creators of a project celebrating great Liverpool signs have scooped an industry award. Switch Media's Letterpool project won a Gold award in the Fresh Creative Awards 2009 for best use of typography typography (tīpŏg`rəfē), the art of printing from movable type. The term typographer is today virtually synonymous with a master printer skilled in the techniques of type and paper stock selection, ornamentation, and composition. . Letterpool saw Switch urge keen photographers to snap the best examples of Liverpool typography "from funky and artistic to commercial and industrial". The project was designed to showcase the best examples of Liverpool's unsung design heritage. Photographs were shown on the Letterpool website, while the best examples will be reproduced in a book later this year. Aaron Bimpson, Switch Media commercial director, said: "We're really proud of the whole team at Switch Media for the win at this year's Fresh Awards. "We were especially pleased as it was for Letterpool - a homegrown art project of ours. "Other award nominees included national big hitters such as McCann Erickson McCann Erickson is a global advertising agency network, with offices in over 130 countries and almost eight decades of multinational experience . McCann is a subsidiary of the Interpublic Group of Companies and The Chase, so to come home with a gold award for typography is welcome recognition of the standard of design work we have been producing this year. This is the first awards we have ever entered, and did so with the view that, while economic times are tough, it is even more important to celebrate creative success and innovative thinking "To win Gold - one of the top awards given out on the night - is really rewarding." Switch, based in Liverpool city centre, is one of the North's fastest-growing technology companies and has featured in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 rankings for two years in a row.
