COLUMN: Medical Memos

YWCA/Battered Women's Resources will present its Aralia Community Service Award to Dr. Bruce J. Man, a pediatrician with Medical Associates Pediatrics, at its annual fundraiser from 6 to 11 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Courtyard by Marriott on Route 2 in Fitchburg. This is the eighth Aralia award given to a community member or agency that has made outstanding contributions to the victims of domestic violence.

Dr. Man received his medical degree from the University of Miami in 1984 and a master's degree in medical management from Carnegie Mellon University/American College of Physician Executives in 2001. He has worked at Medical Associates Pediatrics in Leominster since 1992, where he has been both president and vice president within the practice. Dr. Man has served on many boards and committees, including Tufts Health Plan, Stetson School, the Health Foundation of Central Massachusetts and most recently, the United Way of North Central Massachusetts.

Dr. Brendan McNulty has joined the medical staff at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center at Milford Regional Medical Center on Route 140 in Milford.

Dr. McNulty earned his degree in medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester.

Dr. Vinay Kumar Menon has joined Fallon Clinic's medical team.

Dr. Menon will practice in Fallon Clinic's Department of Internal Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine at St. Vincent Hospital. Dr. Menon received his medical degree from Bangalore Medical College in Karnataka, India, and completed his residency program at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center (Montefiore) in the Bronx, N.Y.

The Massachusetts Medical Society will present the play "A Lady Alone" to commemorate the 125th anniversary of its first female member, Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell. The performance will be at 5:45 p.m. Sept. 26 at the society's headquarters, 860 Winter St., Waltham.

The play was written by Dr. Lynn Eckhert, who will answer questions after the performance. Dr. Eckhert, formerly chairman of family medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, travels extensively as director of academic programs at Partners Harvard Medical International.

Linda Gray Kelley of Charlton plays Dr. Blackwell in this drama that tells the history of modern medicine in an hour. Dr. Blackwell graduated from Geneva Medical School in 1849 and was the first American woman to become a doctor.

Dr. Khursheed Haider has joined Fallon Clinic's Department of Internal Medicine in the Division of Hospital Medicine at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester. Dr. Haider received his medical degree from Hamard College of Medicine and Dentistry in Karachi, Pakistan, and completed his residency program at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, N.Y.

Worcester Physical Therapy Services at 173 Grove St., Worcester, will offer a free presentation on "Massage and Muscles: What's the Connection?" from 6:30 to 7:30 tonight. The speakers are Andrew Vazquez, exercise physiologist, and Desmond Dowling, licensed massage therapist. Light refreshments will be served. The executive board of the Worcester District Dental Society welcomed the following new members at a recent meeting: Dr. Julie Dambly, who practices in Auburn; Dr. Julie Lauenger and Dr. Eric Plascik, who practice in Marlboro; Dr. Luciana Petto Messina of Hudson; Dr. Lisa Lanzillotti Peterson, who practices in Millbury, and Dr. David Moheban, who practices in Worcester.

The Couples Project for Women offers free treatment for women with alcohol dependence who are married or live with a male partner. Weekly one-on-one outpatient therapy for five to six months promotes women's recovery. Some women also receive couples counseling to promote recovery and improve communication. The treatment is part of a study being conducted by researchers at Harvard Medical School and AdCare Hospital. For more information, call (800) 345-3552, ext. 4043.
