The National Coalition of Clergy and Laity (NCCL) chose him as one of two recipients of its Pope Pius XI Pope Pius XI (Latin: Pius PP. XI; Italian: Pio XI; May 31, 1857 – February 10, 1939), born Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti, reigned as Pope from February 6, 1922 and as sovereign of Vatican City from 1929 until his death on February 10, 1939.  award for 1998. The Coalition traditionally chooses both a clergy and a lay recipient for the award on December 31, the anniversary of that pontiff's 1929 encyclical on the Christian education of youth.

Bishop Danylak was chosen because of his forthright critique of the Ontario Catholic bishops' program Fully Alive, and for his call for an affirmation of Humanae vitae. These appeared in separate statements in the June and July/August 1998 issues of Catholic Insight.

The bishop's courageous stand "has earned him the gratitude of the faithful," commented NCCL executive director Gregory Lloyd. "May his generous apostolic fervour...merit him a crown of glory Crown of Glory can refer to:

The NCCL, based near Allentown, Pennsylvannia, is an apostolate comprised of priests, religious, and laity who are "dedicated to a genuine Catholic restoration," Lloyd explained. As well as battling sex education and unorthodox catechetical programs, NCCL also assists homeschooling home·school or home-school
