Award Winning JetFax M5 Now Offers 33.6Kbps Support; Acclaimed multifunction office system jumps ahead of competition, allows users to fax at highest speeds possible.MENLO PARK Menlo Park. 1 Residential city (1990 pop. 28,040), San Mateo co., W Calif.; inc. 1874. Electronic equipment and aerospace products are manufactured in the city. Menlo College and a Stanford Univ. research institute are there. 2 Uninc. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 28, 1996--JetFax, Inc. -- faster than others in the industry to bring a 33.6Kbps modem to market, is announcing the new 33.6Kbps Modem Option for its award winning, laser-class multifunction office system, the JetFax M5. A 33.6Kbps modem will be available as an optional feature for the already shipping JetFax M5, or as an upgrade for users who currently own JetFax M5 machines equipped with 14.4Kbps modems. This new option will be available as of late June 1996. With this new modem option, the M5 will provide a top transfer speed of 33.6Kbps in a proprietary mode, while supporting the newly approved standards for V.34 fax and V.8 fast hand-shaking protocols at 28.8Kbps. This new modem standard will largely increase throughputs while lowering charges for long distance and international calls. "Currently, more than one-third of international telephone traffic is fax," stated Rudy Prince, President of JetFax. "By faxing at 33.6Kbps, telephone charges can be cut 60-80%, representing billions of dollars in potential cost savings. We believe this will enable heavy fax users to justify investing in 33.6Kbps fax capabilities as soon as it becomes available." The JetFax M5 combines 33.6Kbps faxing with complete multifunctionality, including its operations as a laser-quality plain-paper fax machine, a powerful office copier, a laser-quality LED printer, a 300 dpi PC scanner, and a PC fax modem fax modem n. According to Norwell, Mass. based BIS Strategic Decisions, multifunction fax machines are predicted to surpass standalone units by 1998. In fact, BIS predicts that by 1998 more than 3 million multifunction products will be sold in the U.S. alone, making them the leader of all fax machines sold. "More than 80 percent of our survey respondents indicated that they will buy a multifunctional device instead of a stand-alone device or to replace an existing stand-alone device," according to Judith Pirani, director of the Multifunctional Products Service at BIS. JetFax products are available in the U.S. through dealers who belong to the Business Technology Association (BTA (Business Technology Association, Kansas City, MO, www.bta.org).
