Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

LOWELL, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 17, 2003

Avvio Networks today re-affirmed its leadership in the 10Gigabit data transport market announcing the first customer ship and general availability of its A1040 OC192 multiplexer with G.709 encoding and widely tunable DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.

"The A1040 is the first OC48 to OC192 multiplexer to offer G.709 encoding and a widely tunable DWDM OC192 interface in a 2U package," said Leo Goyette, founder and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. , "it provides a much-needed bridge between OC48 and OC192 services."

The A1040 is a quad OC48 to OC192 multiplexer offering LR DWDM on the line side and SR, IR and LR interfaces on the client side at 1310nm or 1550nm. It is also available with 1310nm, 1550nm or DWDM interfaces on the line side.

In addition, Avvio Networks is readying its A1020 10 Gigabit repeater for shipment. The A1020 supports OC192, OC192 w/G.709, 10Gb Ethernet, and 10Gb Ethernet with FEC. It offers either a 1310nm, 1550nm, fixed DWDM or tunable DWDM interface on both the line and client sides.

Both the A1040 and A1020 are manageable via SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  and offer optional APS protection. They can be used with Avvio Networks' A2010 OC3-OC48 Multiplexer, A15XX family of passive OADMs and A1070 EDFA (Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier) A device that boosts the signal in an optical fiber. Introduced in the late 1980s, the EDFA was the first successful optical amplifier.  for a complete end-to-end solution. The A1020 is scheduled for a January first customer ship.

The A1040 and A1020 conform to ITU and Telcordia standards and can be used with optical and MPLS (1) (MultiProtocol Lambda Switching) The earlier name for GMPLS. See GMPLS.
