Avoiding Attendants From Hell: A Practical Guide To Finding, Hiring & Keeping Personal Care Attendants. (Books).

A realistic and useful guide! This book includes information that will be as helpful to anyone considering a move to independent living as it will to those who have been living on their own and want to sharpen sharp·en

their attendant-management skills. The author writes from 20 years of personal experience hiring, managing, and when needed, firing personal-care attendants.

The first chapters guide disabled individuals through a thorough self-assessment to help determine individual care needs and preferences. Price provides excellent pointers on screening and interviewing prospective attendants. She also provides very useful advice about writing a (non-legally-binding) contract with attendants that includes important details ranging from duties and work schedules to rules about sharing food and phones. Her recommendations about maintaining a professional relationship with attendants and being a responsible employer touch on very important topics that, when ignored, can make life unfortunately complicated.

The book is spiral-bound and well organized. While it is not presented in large print, the layout is very easy to read and chapters have wonderfully descriptive titles. In the appendix the author includes sample want ads, employment applications, live-in contracts, and other useful documents.

I recommend this book to anyone who is considering hiring an attendant.
