Avocados ok'd.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture issued new rules that will end the 90-year ban on the export of Hass avocados from Mexico to California.

Despite strenuous objections from California growers--the primary U.S. supplier of avocados--Mexico will be allowed to ship avocados to all 50 U.S. states A U.S. state is any one of the fifty subnational entities of the United States, although four states use the official title "commonwealth". The separate state governments and the federal government share sovereignty, in that an American is a citizen both of the federal entity and  year-round.

The ban on exports to California will be lifted in 2007. Previous U.S. regulations limited Mexican avocados to 31 northern and mid-western U.S. states and imports were confined con·fine

At the request of growers, California, Florida and Hawaii--the primary avocado-producing U.S. states--will remain closed to Mexican exports for another two years.

The CalTrade Report cited industry analysts saying the arrival of the Mexican-grown fruit in California could reduce prices for U.S. consumers, while the U.S. Department of Commerce estimates the new rules could cut California growers' sales by as much as 20 percent.
