), one of the world's largest global technology distributors, has adopted Fair Isaac's Blaze Advisor A system for adding rules-based processing into an application from Fair Isaac Corporation, Minneapolis, MN, (www.fairisaac.com). Blaze Advisor is a Java-based rules engine that enables Windows, Solaris and OS/390 applications to be more easily revised by making changes in the rules (TM) business rules management system as the rules engine for its Rebate rebate, partial refund of the total price paid for goods or services. In the United States, rebates were historically given by railroads to favored shippers as a return on transportation charges.  Management System. Avnet selected the Blaze Advisor system to improve scalability, reduce IT support and provide increased speed to its customer incentive application.

The Avnet Rebate Management System is an online tool that provides value-added resellers A value-added reseller (VAR) is a company that adds some feature(s) to an existing product(s), then resells it (usually to end-users) as an integrated product or complete "turn-key" solution.  with information on manufacturers' rebate and incentive programs and insight into how the partners are tracking against targets. Avnet adopted a rules-based approach to address changes in incentive programs offered by Avnet and its core vendors. Avnet's value-added reseller partners are able to access the Avnet Rebate Management System to learn about their exact position in meeting their targets, bonus opportunities, and rebates that they will receive.

Leveraging Fair Isaac's Blaze Advisor system has enabled Avnet to quickly implement changes from a supplier and reduce the time of implementing new incentive programs from months to a couple of weeks. As the engine of the Avnet Rebate Management System, the solution sifts through thousands of line items to provide Avnet value-added resellers with a view of how their latest sale is impacting their calculated rebate.

"The Avnet Rebate Management System has quickly evolved into a valuable tool for interacting with our customers and ensuring that they are aware of how every sale impacts their targets and rebate amounts," said Jim Joy, Director of Business Applications Development for Avnet. "The integration of Blaze Advisor was a result of our need for increased speed, flexibility and agility in how we implemented and addressed our partners' changing programs. Fair Isaac has proven to be a strong technology partner."

"Very few customer communications are more important than rebate and commission statements," Mark Layden, vice president and general manager of Enterprise Decision Management Technology at Fair Isaac. "It is critical to be accurate, even if the governing rules are regularly changing. Avnet has done a good job in using rules with its incentive application to improve precision and agility in this complex decisioning system. Customers continue to recognize and benefit from the precision, agility and speed that the use of rules at the core of their decision processes affords them. The Avnet rebate management system illustrates the power of rules applied to an ever-changing application."
