Avnet Enterprise Solutions Unveils Fibre Channel Solution for VAX/VMS Environments.

Avnet Enterprise Solutions, an architect of e-business infrastructures, Monday unveiled SANway(SM) for OpenVMS at Compaq Enterprise Technical Symposium.

SANway for OpenVMS is a new technology solution that enables VAX (Virtual Address eXtension) A venerable family of 32-bit computers from HP (via Digital and Compaq) introduced in 1977 with the VAX-11/780. VAX models ranged from desktop units to mainframes all running the same VMS operating system, and VAXes could emulate PDP models  cluster environments running OpenVMS to enhance their storage functionality. SANway for OpenVMS combines enhancements to Compaq's OpenVMS VAX platform with Avnet Enterprise Solutions' financial and technology assessment services, allowing for lower cost of ownership due to lower service costs and less required floor space.

SANway for OpenVMS, engineered by Compaq CustomSystems and offered exclusively through Avnet Enterprise Solutions, is tailored to meet the specific needs of the customer with a custom solution. SANway for OpenVMS services include functional specifications, performance and capacity roadmaps to help the customer take advantage of expanding fibre channel storage technology.

Functional enhancements for the VAX environment include:
-- Utilization of the latest storage technologies including SANs and Modula
Storage

-- Offloading VAX from backups to increase CPU cycles for applications

-- Option to utilize the latest Compaq tape libraries

-- Increase in overall storage performance
