Upgrades. It's a common event when computer systems no longer meet current technology demands and companies must buy new machines. This past month CU-Boulder partnered with a local, alumni-founded software company, Avitek Inc., in an effort to "recycle" older computers from several CU-Boulder departments. The partnership enables the Family Learning Center, a non-profit agency that provides life-long learning and economic self-sufficiency support services support services Psychology Non-health care-related ancillary services–eg, transportation, financial aid, support groups, homemaker services, respite services, and other services , the opportunity to establish a new computer lab - available to more than 150 Boulder families.

The CU-Boulder/Avitek partnership combines the university's older computers with Avitek's information technology expertise to completely overhaul the machines. Tim Miller, the founder of Avitek, developed his vision for a software development company specializing in the emerging Java technology platform while attending graduate school at CU. Not only does Miller have CU ties, but actually 16 of Avitek's 28 employees are CU-Boulder graduates.

"As a Boulder-based technology company, we look for opportunities to give back to the community that tie in with our strong technical foundation," says Avitek's Miller. "It is also a tremendous opportunity to partner with CU where a lot of the ideas were sparked for what Avitek is founded upon today."

More than eight company employees worked to refurbish, repair, reconfigure and add new software and memory to the used computers donated by CU-Boulder's Police and Parking Services, Office of Planning, Budget and Analysis, Telecommunications, Institutional Relations and JILA JILA Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics (Space)  - a joint institute of the university and the National Institute of Standards and Technology National Institute of Standards and Technology, governmental agency within the U.S. Dept. of Commerce with the mission of "working with industry to develop and apply technology, measurements, and standards" in the national interest. . Avitek also provided additional computer supplies for use at the Family Learning Center. On January 27th, volunteers from Avitek will install 10 computer systems for the Center's new computer lab - providing literacy training programs as well as early childhood education, after school tutoring, recreation and child care services to Boulder families.
