This patent relates to the use of UTP wiring for combined desktop video and control messages, in which a communications link controls call transmission, call routing, multipoint conferencing Same as teleconferencing. This is a rather redundant phrase, because conferencing implies three or more participants, rather than point-to-point between two people. , or display of the video signals. It applies to video in any form: digital or analog. In practice, the technology that this patent covers enables an end-user to use his computer to hold an interactive, face-to-face video conversation or view other user-controlled video applications during which a UTP premises network transports the video signal.

This 46th patent complements two other previously issued patents: No. 6,212,547, Avistar's 26th patent issued April 3, 2001, which addresses the combined transport of video and data collaboration See data conferencing.  over UTP wiring; and Avistar's 45th patent, No. 6,426,769, issued July 30, 2002, which relates to the transport of high-quality analog video from a source to a display over a UTP premises network.

The new patent is a key addition to Avistar's extensive portfolio, which covers the core videoconferencing functionalities and architectures that are part of the AvistarVOS(TM) video operating system and Avistar's networked video collaboration products. In addition to these three patents covering digital and analog video on UTP premises wiring, other patents cover call routing capabilities, call acceptance features, collaboration directories and "presence-based" calling, and remote connection control, among others.

"Avistar was the first to implement and patent many features that have become essential to the widespread adoption of video in the enterprise," said William Campbell, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. The AvistarVOS enterprise video software and networked video infrastructure provide professionals with a full range of video communication services -- multi-party video calls, broadcast, video-on-demand, record and publish -- all provided directly from end-point desktops and rooms. CPI patents technologies in synchronization with and in advance of Avistar products and makes its collaborative video intellectual property available to partners through its licensing program.

Inquiries regarding CPI's licensing programs may be directed to Paul Carmichael, primary licensing advisor, by arrangement with Amanda Redd, 650/610-2900.
