Agawam, Massachusetts, resident Denis Marchetto does not let his disability impede his active participation in the realm of sports. At Agawam High School, he was the manager for three different sports teams--soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey. Currently, he participates in bowling, wheelchair soccer, and golf. A self-described avid golfer, Denis has participated in the Golf for All Persons (GAP) program for three summers. Because he has more functional ability in his left upper extremity, Denis thought he should play left-handed with left-handed clubs. After a first frustrating season, it was suggested he use right-handed clubs in his left hand. Since then, he has become much more proficient. This free program is provided for golfers who have disabilities and is sponsored by the U.S. Sport and Wellness Center for People with Disabilities and Child and Family Services of Pioneer Valley in Springfield, Massachusetts. Professional expertise is offered at the Fenway Golf Center to participants 12 years and older. Clubs, balls, and an adapted golf cart are provided if participants need them. This year's program culminated with a free nine-hole golf outing and cookout at the Southwick (MA) Country Club. In the photo, Denis is shown practicing at the driving range.
