The Avid Media Composer version 9.0 system, available on the Windows NT platform, will offer new editing, workflow and networking capabilities, and includes the introduction of dual streams of uncompressed video for online editing Online editing is generally the final stage of video editing.

and a new Universal Offline Editing option. Avid is also announcing the shipment of the Film Composer(R) XL and the Media Composer 9000 XL systems.

"Version 9.0 is the best Media Composer system that I have ever worked on. The quality of dual streams of uncompressed video, with the addition of features such as Batch Import, ExpertRender, which has been a real time saver by significantly cutting down on render time, and soft drop shadows for titling, which we use constantly, combine for a great editing tool," said Chris Perkins, production editor and beta customer for a local CBS-affiliate station. "Initially we were nervous about adding a Windows NT system to our process, which has always included Macintosh-based Media Composers. But the move has been great. The user interface is transparent between the two platforms and I can move back and forth between the two with great ease, and we were able to get up and running right away with very little learning curve."

The Media Composer 9.0 system offers a number of new software and hardware enhancements, including:

-High performance online editing - Dual streams of uncompressed ITU-R ITU-R ITU Radiocommunication Sector  601 video for online editing directly within the Media Composer environment at uncompressed video resolutions. This option allows for up to two simultaneous streams of uncompressed video complete with real-time operation Noun 1. real-time operation - data processing fast enough to keep up with an outside process

data processing - (computer science) a series of operations on data by a computer in order to retrieve or transform or classify information
of 2-D and 3-D effects with downstream keyer. Other online editing improvements include key frameable dual-stream color correction Altering the colors in an image in order to print or display it properly or for special effects. Depending on the application, color correction can be a significant problem if the resulting image must be approved or a purchase is made because of color choice. , real-time spill spill - register spilling  suppression and scratch removal.

-Increased productivity and collaboration-features such as the ExpertRender(tm) mode, chroma key See color key.  support, keyframable color effects and soft-edge drop shadows on titles. Additionally, collaborative support is enhanced through the Avid Unity(tm) MediaNet system for facility-wide media sharing and management, drag & drop import/export capabilities, a Marquee(R) titling plug-in support option and import/export templates for single-click importing and exporting to Avid applications.

-New 24P offline tool set - The Universal Offline editing feature option enables 24P offline editing for creating frame-accurate cutlists and 24P HD EDLs, while working seamlessly with the Avid Symphony(tm) Universal Mastering system's capabilities via Total Conform. Based on Avid's Academy Award(tm)-winning 24 fps technology, this capability enables editors to create 24 frame offline projects from any film or 24P video source, and offers as one of its features the ability to previsualize pan-and-scan moves from 16x9 and 4x3 sources and perfectly recreate them on the Avid Symphony Universal system for finishing at various 601 outputs including NTSC (National TV Standards Committee) The committee that developed the television standards for the U.S, which are also used in Canada, Japan, South Korea and several Central and South American countries. Both the committee and the standard are called "NTSC. , PAL, 4x3 and 16x9.

Other Media Composer XL V9.0 system benefits:

-Bin sequence, project and user settings compatibility with all Media Composer and Avid Symphony products

-Component, S-Video, Composite and SDI (1) (Serial Digital Interface) A physical interface widely used for transmitting digital video in various formats. For electrical transmission, it uses a high grade of coaxial cable and a single BNC connector with Teflon insulation.  video input and output are all standard

-Compatibility with media created on Avid Symphony or Media Composer XL systems for the Macintosh platform

"Media Composer 9.0 further solidifies Avid's role as the driving force in digital nonlinear A system in which the output is not a uniform relationship to the input.

production," said Patrick Dumas, Vice President of Marketing, Avid Technology. "By integrating the Media Composers system's already powerful feature set with dual streams of uncompressed for online editing and the Universal Offline Editing package, we are delivering another powerful piece of Avid's totally integrated Nonlinear Production Environment. We believe that the continued interoperability The capability of two or more hardware devices or two or more software routines to work harmoniously together. For example, in an Ethernet network, display adapters, hubs, switches and routers from different vendors must conform to the Ethernet standard and interoperate with each other.  between Media Composer and Symphony systems provides our customers with the vertically integrated offline to finish digital post-production environment that they need to be competitive in the next millennium."

With the shipping of the Media Composer 9.0 system, Avid is also introducing two new members of Avid's XL family of nonlinear editing tools: the Avid Film Composer XL and the Avid Media Composer 9000 XL systems.

-Film Composer XL: The latest generation of the Academy Award(tm)-winning Film Composer system, this new version includes full 24 fps record, edit and playback features as well as the Universal Offline editing package for 24P HD offline and the FX package with full realtime 2D and 3D effects, paint and compositing features. Both systems will be available on the Windows NT platform and will utilize Avid's Meridien(tm) video subsystem A unit or device that is part of a larger system. For example, a disk subsystem is a part of a computer system. A bus is a part of the computer. A subsystem usually refers to hardware, but it may be used to describe software. .
