Advanced Software Solution To Provide Critical Component for

Optimizing Networks to Support New Services

Avici Systems (Nasdaq: AVCI) and Dorado Software today announced an agreement to deliver a comprehensive, customizable and highly scalable element management software solution to carriers deploying Avici's Terabit Switch Router See layer 3 switch.  (TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) Refers to a program that remains in memory when the user exits it in order that it be immediately available at the press of a hotkey. (R)). First product will be available in early 2001.

Avici and Dorado Software are delivering a scalable management solution that will tightly integrate with a carrier's existing Operation Support Systems (OSS Oss (ôs), city (1994 pop. 62,141), North Brabant prov., S Netherlands; chartered 1399. It is a significant industrial center. Manufactures include meat products, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, electrical equipment, and metalware. ), as well as take advantage of the optical capacity in the backbone and dynamically provision new services.

and QoS mechanisms to drive service levels, vendors must provide solutions that more tightly couple the data and optical transport layers. Avici's element management platform will enable service providers to more quickly provision new services and implement SLAs. This type of solution will be a welcome addition to current CLI (1) (Call Level Interface) A database programming interface from the SQL Access Group (SAG), an SQL membership organization. SAG's CLI is an attempt to standardize the SQL language for database access.  and SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. "The business of providing Internet services is evolving rapidly from a single best-effort offering to a complex mix of differentiated services Offerings that can be classified by type, or quality, of service. For example, a differentiated services network could prioritize real time traffic for a higher fee. . The increase in service complexity requires a new generation of Internet hardware coupled with new techniques for command and control," said Pete Chadwick, vice president of product management at Avici. "The partnership with Dorado will provide our customers with a new level of network management that provides the necessary tools to deploy highly scalable solutions for driving intelligence into the optical core."

Under the agreement, Dorado is providing Avici with a customizable framework based on Oware(TM), its advanced environment for delivery of scalable networked applications, and its RedCell(TM) suite of applications for delivering and managing personalized network services for next generation network infrastructures.

"The combination of our particular areas of expertise has allowed Dorado and Avici to offer carriers a scalable service and network management solution for terabit networks. The solution will provide new efficiencies and capabilities in managing the industry's largest and most scalable switching and routing platforms based on Avici technology," said Tim Sebring, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Dorado Software. "Working with Avici enables Dorado to further enhance our capabilities for service providers in the optical and IP core networks who want to offer policy-enabled, differentiated services, personalized to the end-user."

Leveraging Dorado's advanced, distributed, object-oriented software technology and applications, the Avici solution feature set includes subscriber management, service assurance, service provisioning, system and network performance, security management capabilities and a suite of policy-based topological applications aimed at optimizing the role of the TSR in the Internet core.

The element management platform will ease the deployment of new services running on the Avici TSR by leveraging advances in distributed computing (1) The use of multiple computers networked throughout a wide geographical area, or the world via the Internet, in order to solve a single problem.
