Avici Systems Announces Immediate Availability of Its IPriori Software With Scalable MPLS Support.

Business/Technology Editors

NORTH BILLERICA, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 24, 2000

Superior MPLS-TE scalability, reliability and demonstrated

interoperability The capability of two or more hardware devices or two or more software routines to work harmoniously together. For example, in an Ethernet network, display adapters, hubs, switches and routers from different vendors must conform to the Ethernet standard and interoperate with each other.  places Avici at the

forefront of the industry

Avici Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: AVCI), a leading provider of scalable core routing solutions for intelligent IP-over-optical networks, today announced the immediate availability of its IPriori(TM) 3.0 software with Multi-Protocol Label Switching-Traffic Engineering (MPLS-TE) capabilities for its Terabit Switch Router See layer 3 switch.  (TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) Refers to a program that remains in memory when the user exits it in order that it be immediately available at the press of a hotkey. (R)). Avici's MPLS (1) (MultiProtocol Lambda Switching) The earlier name for GMPLS. See GMPLS.

(2) (MultiProtocol Label Switching) A standard from the IETF for including routing information in the packets of an IP network.
and Quality of Service (QoS) solution enables service providers to efficiently utilize the network to provision new IP services based on business rules and not the constraints of the network topology See topology. .

Avici's MPLS-TE implementation offers industry-leading scalability with support for as many as 15,000 tunnels. Avici has also combined support of MPLS-TE with its Composite Links technology to enable rerouting of MPLS Label Switched Paths (networking) label switched path - (LSP) The specific path through a network that a datagram follows, based on its MPLS labels.  (LSPs) in as low as 15 milliseconds, compared to 45 milliseconds with competitive products. Additionally, Avici's MPLS-TE solution was proven to be interoperable with MPLS implementations from other router vendors through testing conducted at George Mason University's Advanced Internet Lab. The TSR also supports true "Make-Before-Break" data-plane protection to ensure that no packets are dropped when LSPs are rerouted.

"Avici is recognized as a pioneer in the development of MPLS standards and possesses strong talent in terms of engineering experts in the area of MPLS code development," said Chris Nicoll, vice president of infrastructure at analyst firm Current Analysis. "The general availability of Avici's very scalable MPLS implementation enables high-growth next-generation IP services, such as VoIP, VPNs and video delivery, that will drive future profits for service providers."

"The inclusion of MPLS-TE in our IPriori software gives carriers the assurance they will be able to handle all traffic types as effectively and efficiently as possible," said Pete Chadwick, vice president of marketing for Avici. "Avici's MPLS traffic engineering will enable carriers to engineer and control data flows with varying priority levels without having to over-provision the network."

Avici's TSR with MPLS-TE is being demonstrated at the MPLS2000 conference hosted by UUNET (UUNET Technologies, Inc., Fairfax, VA, www.uunet.net) Founded in 1987, UUNET was the first commercial Internet service provider. Originally offering e-mail and news, it became a full Internet service organization providing dial-up and leased line accounts as well as archive space for  and George Mason University's Advanced Internet Lab from Oct. 22-24, 2000.

About Avici Systems

Avici Systems Inc., headquartered in North Billerica, Mass., is a developer of next-generation Internet backbone (communications, networking) Internet backbone - High-speed networks that carry Internet traffic.

These communications networks are provided by companies such as AT&T, GTE, IBM, MCI, Netcom, Sprint, UUNET and consist of high-speed links in the T1, T3, OC1 and OC3 ranges.
platforms that optimize and drive creation of all-optical "speed-of-light" networks. Designed to bring packet intelligence to the core of optical networks, Avici's technologies offer superior scalability, resiliency and port density enabling just-in-time bandwidth provisioning, high reliability and the quality of service needed for carriers and ISPs to support mission-critical applications of the future.
