Mr. Thomas had a distinguished career in aviation, and played a key role in building Aviation General, Incorporated and Commander Aircraft Company. He joined Commander Aircraft Company in 1995 as the Senior Vice-President of Marketing and Sales and subsequently became the Company's President/CEO and member of Aviation General's Board of Directors.

Dean was a recognized leader in the aviation industry. Prior to joining Commander Aircraft Company, he was President of Strategic Marketing Resources and served in various senior level positions with Piper Aircraft Piper Aircraft, Inc., is a manufacturer of general aviation aircraft, located in Vero Beach, Florida. Originally founded as the Taylor Brothers Aircraft Manufacturing Company in September of 1927 by Clarence Gilbert Taylor and Gordon A.
 Corporation.

Mr. Thomas was a graduate of Bucknell University Bucknell University (bŭknĕl`), at Lewisburg, Pa.; coeducational; founded 1846 as the Univ. of Lewisburg. Its present name was adopted in 1886. Bucknell has a college of arts and sciences and a college of engineering. . He is survived by his wife Sue, their son Jordan, 7 and their daughter Deanna, 4.

Aviation General, Incorporated Chairman/CEO, Wirt D. Walker, III, will assume Mr. Thomas' duties until a successor is named. Mr. Walker stated: "Dean had a profound impact on all of us and our company. He was universally well liked and admired, and he was a close personal friend. We will all miss him very much and his spirit will be with us. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Thomas family."
