The opening of the company's 5,500-square-meter adhesive coating plant in Kunshan, China, last week represents a significant first step for Avery Dennison in serving the important Chinese and Asia Pacific markets with high-quality self-adhesive products.

"Our presence in China will support the growth of local label converters in China and throughout Asia Pacific, as well as global consumer products manufacturers who are currently building, or have already built, manufacturing facilities here.

"We recognize an immediate and growing market for high- quality self-adhesive label materials in Asia Pacific, and we are moving aggressively to become the leading materials producer in the region," Miller stated. "Until now, we have imported our Fasson-brand pressure- sensitive adhesive materials into Hong Kong and other locations in Asia Pacific from our other Avery Dennison operations," explained Miller.

"Label converters for multinational consumer product manufacturers have then printed and converted those materials to meet the needs of the Asian market. As we establish local manufacturing operations throughout China and the region, such as our Kunshan plant, we will be able to serve global consumer products companies and local label converters more effectively."

Commenting on the company's plans to build a combined manufacturing and office facility in Hong Kong, Fletcher said: "We are pleased that this new Hong Kong facility will create much-needed manufacturing capacity for our fast-growing Soabar business as well as provide a permanent base for the activities of our Asia Pacific management team. It makes sense to organize these activities in Hong Kong, where support and service can be readily available to our growing customer base."

Avery Dennison has developed a solid business foundation in the Asian marketplace spanning two decades, as part of the company's fundamental growth strategy to expand its business internationally. Since 1977, the company has successfully operated its Soabar Systems business in Hong Kong. In 1989, the company established a pressure-sensitive adhesive materials facility in Korea to serve the region's growing and increasingly sophisticated consumer packaging industry.

By 1994, Avery Dennison was operating distribution centers in Singapore and Shanghai Shanghai (shăng`hī`, shäng`hī`), city (1994 est. pop. 12,980,000), in, but independent of, Jiangsu prov., E China, on the Huangpu (Whangpoo) River where it flows into the Chang (Yangtze) estuary. , and regional headquarters were established in Hong Kong, organizing all Avery Dennison business activities in that part of the world into one group.
