Avenue ace blackballed! BOWLS: Hot shot Gilbert out in the cold after row over late subs.Byline: Harry Reynolds SIMON Simon, in the Bible. 1 One of the Maccabees. 2 or Simon Peter: see Peter, Saint. 3 See Simon, Saint. 4 Kinsman of Jesus. 5 Leper of Bethany in whose house a woman anointed Jesus' feet. GILBERT, Warwickshire's most successful player over the past decade, has packed up the sport after Avenue Leamington refused to renew his membership for not paying his subscription on time. The closing date for subscriptions was the second week in January but, despite receiving a reminder, Gilbert had still not paid six weeks later. He then attended a club committee meeting to re-apply for membership but was voted out in a secret paper vote. Gilbert admits that his behaviour at the club - including turning up for games the worse for drink - left a lot to be desired and no doubt this was taken into consideration when it was decided to blackball him. But the fact remains that had he paid his subscription on time he would still be a member of Avenue BC. The situation has prompted a fierce exchange of views between Gilbert and onetime pairs partner Andy Smith on an online bowls forum, the latter claiming: " You seem to think that the club has lost its No. 1 player, but no one is bigger than the club." After starting his career at Whitnash BC where, as a teenager he won all of the club's competitions, he moved to Avenue and in his time there he has won three national championships - the pairs, junior singles and mixed fours - together with the county pairs (twice), the triples, fours (twice) and junior singles (twice). In addition he was runner-up in the singles and pairs (twice) and at club level has won the championship singles on five occasions. Gilbert lifted several titles at South Warwickshire and Royal Leamington tournament levels and, after playing five times in England's junior team, he was awarded his first senior cap in 2007. He was also selected for last season's international trial but cried off because at that time he said he was curtailing his bowls activities. And for the same reason he opted out of the county's current Middleton Cup squad after being a regular choice for the past seven years. There is little doubt that 27-year-old Gilbert, with his outstanding natural ability, was destined for a long career at international level but now that has seemingly gone by the board. He keeps changing his mind about things and the latest news is that he may return to bowls if and when he joins another club. If he does not it will be the waste of a great talent.. n WARWICKSHIRE got their competitive programme under way with a massive 132- 92 Midland Counties victory over Lincolnshire at Entaco - and with five winning rinks, the County picked up 20 of the 22 points on offer.
