Avalanche beat Oilers 4-3 in shootout

Wojtek Wolski and Marek Svatos scored shootout goals to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-3 win over Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night.

Colorado goalie Peter Budaj denied Sam Gagner, Ales Hemsky and Marty Reasoner in the shootout.

Budaj finished the game with 30 saves.

Colorado has now won six of its last seven games while the Oilers are winless in their last four games.

Ian Laperriere scored his second goal of the game 2:20 into the third period to tie the game at 3. It was Laperriere's first two-goal game since March 21 of last season against Edmonton.

Dwayne Roloson was back in net after being pulled in the first period of the Oilers' 5-2 loss to Minnesota on Monday. Roloson gave up three goals on eight shots against the Wild.

He bounced back with 35 saves against Colorado.

Laperriere scored the first goal of the game when he redirected a shot from Jeff Finger near the blue line.

Laperriere later had an assist on Tyler Arnason's first-period goal.

The Oilers scored three times in the first period on goals from Kyle Brodziak, Tom Gilbert and Hemsky. It was a change of pace as Edmonton had been held scoreless in the opening period of its last three games.

Brodziak's goal came after a turnover by Finger in the Avalanche's zone. Later in the first, Gilbert beat Budaj with a wrist shot for his third goal of the season.

Hemsky's goal came just 1:09 later on a power play. He took a pass from Jarret Stoll at center ice, completely fooled defenseman Kurt Sauer with a move and then beat Budaj high on the glove side.

It was only the Oilers' fifth power-play goal of the season. They entered the game with the worst power play in the league. Edmonton is now 5-for-64.

Ryan Smyth played against his former team for the second time this season. His wrist shot in the shootout was stuffed by Roloson. He logged 20 minutes, 32 seconds of ice time and took three shots.

Smyth played parts of 12 seasons with Edmonton, appearing in 770 regular season games. It's the fifth most in franchise history.

Joe Sakic's eight-game assist and point streak was halted. He had eight shots on goal. Sakic's shootout opportunity clanged off the top of the crossbar.

Sakic remains 10 assists shy of becoming just the 11th player to reach 1,000 for his career.

Notes:@ Avalanche F Brad Richardson has been cleared to play by the team's medical staff and was reassigned to the team's AHL affiliate in Cleveland on Wednesday. Richardson has been out all season with a wrist injury. ... Edmonton D Mathieu Roy missed his second game after separating his left shoulder against Nashville on Nov. 2. He's out indefinitely. So is D Matt Greene, who fractured his left fibula against Detroit on Oct. 30. ... Wolski played in his 100th game Wednesday night.
