Avago Technologies Introduces IrSimple Protocol Software for Instant High-Speed IrDA Transfer in Camera Phones and Other Mobile Devices; New Global IrDA Standard Increases Transfer Rate of Still Image, Video and Music Files up to 90 Percent.

BARCELONA, Spain -- Avago Technologies today announced the release of its IrSimple protocol software, a new global IrDA (Infrared Data Association See IrDA.

(standard, body) Infrared Data Association - (IrDA) A non-profit trade association providing standards to ensure the quality and interoperability of infrared (IR) hardware.
) standard for camera phones, digital cameras and other mobile devices incorporating IrDA infrared communications hardware. Avago's ASDL-S900 IrSimple protocol software can be implemented alone or coexist with existing IrDA protocol standards.

The IrSimple protocol improves IrDA transfer throughput as compared to existing IrDA protocols for large files, including high-resolution JPEG JPEG

WMA encodes rapidly and is known to be especially effective at low bit rates.  music files and AVI (Audio Video Interleaved) A Windows multimedia video format from Microsoft. It interleaves standard waveform audio and digital video frames (bitmaps) to provide reduced animation at 15 fps at 160x120x8 resolution. Audio is 11,025Hz, 8-bit samples. , WMV (Windows Media Video) A family of digital video compression technologies from Microsoft based on MPEG-4. Version 9 of the WMV codec was released to the SMPTE organization and became the SMPTE 421M standard, otherwise known as VC-1 (see VC-1).  and 3G video files. It is able to achieve a throughput as high as 90 percent. For example, at the 4 Mbps FIR (fast infrared) data rate, existing IrDA protocol might achieve a data transfer rate of 2 Mbps, whereas the IrSimple protocol would attain up to 3.6 Mbps.

"Avago is currently the only company supporting the IrSimple IrDA global standard with a complete hardware and software solution," said Chee-Kien Lim, worldwide business manager for infrared products in Avago Technologies' Optical Communication Solutions Division. "IrSimple represents the missing link for digital cameras, camera phones and PDAs by instantly connecting enabled devices for extremely fast file transfer without the complications and lack of security inherent with other wireless technologies."

With IrSimple, users can quickly and easily ("point and shoot") transmit images from a camera phone, PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) A handheld computer for managing contacts, appointments and tasks. It typically includes a name and address database, calendar, to-do list and note taker, which are the functions in a personal information manager (see PIM).  or digital still camera to a color photo printer or a television for immediate viewing. Users can also enjoy fast data transmission between two mobile devices. IrSimple allows business travelers to make slide presentations directly from their PDAs or smart phones to infrared-equipped projectors, eliminating the need for notebook PCs and associated cables.

Avago's IrSimple solution has been tested and verified at all standard speeds. It supports SIR (serial infrared, 115 Kbps), MIR (medium infrared, 1.152 Mbps), FIR (fast infrared, 4 Mbps), and VFIR VFIR Very Fast IRDA
VFIR Very Fast Infra Red
(very fast infrared, 16 Mbps). It also supports UFIR UFIR UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) to Fighter Imagery Relay

(ultra fast infrared, 100 Mbps) and a frame size of up to 32 KB. Avago's IrSimple Protocol can be implemented in a wide variety of consumer devices because it supports both bidirectional The ability to move, transfer or transmit in both directions.  and unidirectional The transfer or transmission of data in a channel in one direction only.  profiles.

To use IrSimple with existing IrDA protocols, Avago offers its HSDL-S101 IrOBEX (infrared object exchange) v. 1.3 and HSDL-S100 IrDA protocol stack, which have been installed in numerous mobile devices. Avago supplies the ASDL-S900 IrSimple source code in standard ANSI-C programming language, making it portable to a variety of platforms.
