Avago Technologies' David Dolfi Honored with IEEE Fellow.

Pioneer in Parallel Optics Technologies to Receive Prestigious Award at OFC/NFOEC

SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States
San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
, Calif. -- Avago Technologies Avago Technologies is an American company which was earlier the semiconductor products division of HP and later Agilent Technologies, before being spun off into a distinct legal entity. It holds more than 2,000 patents.  today announced that David Dolfi, an Avago research fellow, has been named an IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  Fellow by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Not to be confused with the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE).

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers or IEEE (pronounced as eye-triple-e
(IEEE) for his technical leadership in integrated optics Combining electrical and optical components on the same silicon-based substrates used in the fabrication of a semiconductor chip. Also called "silicon photonics," fiber-optic communications employs numerous integrated optics devices, including lasers, photodetectors, beam splitters,  and optical interconnects. Avago is a leading supplier of innovative semiconductor solutions for advanced communications, industrial and commercial applications. Dolfi will receive this distinguished award at the Plenary and Awards Session during the OFC/NFOEC conference held next week in the Anaheim Convention Center Anaheim Convention Center is a major convention center in Anaheim, California. It is located across from the Disneyland Resort on Katella Avenue. Much of the Anaheim Convention Center has been renovated in recent years with state-of-the-art facilities. .

Dolfi's research work in optical interconnects involved the development of parallel optic module technology, which gave rise to the current line of parallel optics products successfully developed and commercialized by Avago Technologies. As a result, Avago continues to hold the leading market position in the parallel optics industry.

"Dave Dolfi has made multiple important contributions to the fields of optical communications and optical measurement," said Steve Newton, Vice President of Finance and Administration for the IEEE Lasers and Electro Optics Society. "Among his contributions was his pioneering work on a practical, reproducible, high-speed electro-optic modulator that was among the first integrated optic devices to be deployed successfully in a commercial product - a broadband optical network analyzer for component test. Additionally, Dave led teams that made fundamental innovations in the area of high-speed fiber optic interconnects and were the first to propose and demonstrate integrated Course Wavelength Division Multiplexing See WDM.

 transceivers for optical networks."

The development of Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing See CWDM.  (CWDM (Course WDM) An optical transmission method that is used for shorter distances than dense WDM (DWDM). Also known as "wide WDM," CWDM transmits fewer channels and uses wider spacing between the channels for distances up to 60 km. Wider spacing up to 25 nm, compared to 1. ) became the LX-4 Physical Layer Standard of IEEE 10 Gigabit Ethernet. Combining CWDM with parallel optics, Dolfi's team built the highest bandwidth optical interconnect to date -- a 48 channel module with date rates up to 500 Gb per second.
