and their samurai armies, with their strict honor codes and endless bloody battles of acquisition and vengeance, is pictured vividly, giving an authentic insight into Japanese character at the time and the contrast between Japanese culture and that of the US. Van Dyke's superb semi-voiced narration makes this intricate novel of Japan from the 14th through the 20th centuries gripping, moving, and fascinating. With nuanced expressiveness, she portrays the arrogant samurai, the imperial feudal lords, and the soft-spoken geisha, maids, and noble ladies, as well as the sweet but forthright American, Emily. She manages to keep a plot filled with frequent flashbacks and myriad characters drawn into a reasonably cohesive whole, handling the bridging passage between dialogues smoothly and maintaining the listener's interest at all times.
