BANDON - The Bandon psychologist found dead on a beach over the weekend probably was sexually assaulted, an official said Tuesday.

An autopsy uncovered evidence missed during an earlier, preliminary examination of the body of Judith B. Elman, 52, said R. Paul Frasier, chief deputy district attorney for Coos County Coos County is the name of two counties in the United States:

  • Coos County, Oregon
.

An exercise enthusiast, Elman was killed Saturday while walking or jogging on the beach north of Seven Devils' Wayside, just north of Bandon. A beach walker discovered her body Sunday.

Elman ran on the beach every day of the week, said Theresa Adams, who rents a house with her husband and three sons on Elman's 8-acre coastal property.

Early reports indicated that Elman was struck on the head with an object, but authorities declined to release further information about the cause of death or the sexual assault.

She was last seen at 4:15 p.m. Saturday during a shopping trip to Coos Bay Coos Bay (ks), city (1990 pop. 15,076), Coos co., SW Oreg., a port of entry on Coos Bay; founded 1854 as Marshfield, inc. 1874, renamed 1944. , Frasier said. Less than three hours later, a man reported an abandoned sport utility vehicle on a logging road about 4 miles from the beach.

The car was Elman's 1997 silver Honda CRV CRV Curve

, apparently stolen after her killing and taken for a joyride until it got stuck in the mud on the unpaved road, Frasier said. Oregon State Police are checking the car for any evidence that might provide clues about who attacked Elman.
