Autopsy shows US soldier killed with two shots in standoff with German police

A 30-year-old U.S. soldier who took his ex-girlfriend hostage was killed by two shots fired by German police commandos, according to autopsy results released Wednesday.

Pvt. Jeremiah W. Carmack, of Union, Ohio, died March 14 at Leopoldina Hospital in the southern town of Schweinfurt after the standoff with police.

German police fired two shots at Carmack, who was armed with an M4 carbine, and the autopsy showed he was hit with both rounds, police said.

The incident was sparked after Carmack tied up his ex-girlfriend up in her apartment. She was able to escape and alert police, authorities have said.

Carmack also fled, but police were able to track him using a helicopter with a thermal camera.

Police commandos confronted the soldier, who threatened them with the rifle he was carrying, causing them to open fire. Carmack was critically injured and rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery but died several hours later, police said.

In a statement, the Army said that Carmack was an automated logistical specialist with the 1st Infantry Division, assigned to the headquarters company of the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment.

The Army is still investigating how Carmack ended up with the weapon off post and whether he fired it.
