Autonomous seaplane will go into production in 2008.


AN UNMANNED AIRCRAFT Unmanned Aircraft (UA) is a term used in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) definition of Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS). UA refers to the aircraft portion of the system required to operate it, also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.  THAT CAN take off and land in water without any launching or trapping contraptions is planned for production late next year.

, can take off from the surface of water and carry up to 35 pounds of payload on a full tank of fuel. It is designed to fly as far away as 100 nautical miles and loiter loiter v. to linger or hang around in a public place or business where one has no particular or legal purpose. In many states, cities, and towns there are statutes or ordinances against loitering by which the police can arrest someone who refuses to "move along.  in the sky for five hours at 65 knots. During that time, the drone can land on water to pause for an hour before returning to its launching point.

The ground control station also allows multiple Sea Scouts to be commanded by one person.

Other unmanned seaplanes have been developed, but require catapults and parachutes for launching and recovery, says Pruzek.

Navy officials and sailors had told the company that they wanted a system that would reduce the amount of equipment necessary to support it and bring it on board a ship. They also asked that the system be quickly reconfigurable to accommodate a variety of threats, says Pruzek.

The Sea Scout's modular payload space can carry mission equipment packages that require a sensor-water interface, such as undersea communications. Such a capability is not possible with other ship-based unmanned systems that cannot land on water, he says.

 and SEAL teams, sailors aboard next-generation surface ships, such as LCS LCS - Language for Communicating Systems  and DDG-1000, Coast Guard and other port security units and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Agency.

A flight test will take place this month at Fort Hood, rex., and testing for payload integration is scheduled for late this year into early 2008.
