Automotive Cameras to Play Key Role in Vehicle Safety, says ABI Research.

OYSTER BAY Oyster Bay, uninc. area (1990 pop. 6,687) of the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau co., SE N.Y., on N Long Island, on Long Island Sound; settled 1653. It is chiefly residential. , N.Y. -- The automotive market has just begun to witness the emergence of onboard camera systems, primarily used for such applications as lane departure warning See lane departure system. . According to new research from market intelligence firm ABI Abi (ā`bī) [short for Abijah], in the Bible, King Hezekiah's mother.

Research, in addition to watching the road ahead, automotive cameras will also be used to monitor the driver and occupants for several new safety applications over the next few years.

Onboard cameras are the predominant technologies earmarked for driver monitoring. Through the use of specialized algorithms, these cameras will monitor the driver and check for conditions of distraction or drowsiness drows·i·ness

. Cameras will also be used for occupant detection as part of next-generation airbag systems.

"We are expecting a new dynamic testing dynamic testing Lab medicine A testing format in which 2+ samples of Pt blood or urine are obtained at a specified time interval. "This will significantly impact all automakers looking to sell to this market."

The major advantages of camera-based occupant detection systems over current pressure/weight sensor-based systems are in improving occupant classification and position-sensing (is this an adult? A child? A suitcase?), and in dynamically suppressing airbag deployment. This can not only save lives but decrease costs, because the number of airbags in a vehicle has increased so much that it may soon cost more to replace all the deployed airbags in a vehicle than just to buy a new car.

ABI Research's new studies, "Driver Monitoring Systems" and "Automotive Radar/Lidar Systems" track the market potential for automotive camera, radar, and lidar, e-fields, and ultrasonic systems for use both inside and outside the vehicle. Business issues, trends and technological advances are detailed, along with their expected market impact. The studies examine current and proposed commercial system deployments and analyze how these systems will evolve and converge.
