Byline: Book notes by The Register-Guard

Valerie Brooks, Richard Cass, Milt Cunningham, Carla Perry, Eve Powers and Brenda Shaw will read from the new anthology, "Scent of Cedars: Promising Writers of the Pacific Northwest," at 3 p.m. Saturday at Barnes and Noble, 1163 Valley River Drive.

The readings are part of a fund-raiser for the ``Readin' in the Rain'' project. Information about the project will be available from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. For information, call 687-0356.

John Daniel was a 17th century musician, born in Somerset, England.

Daniel held some offices at court, and was the author of Songs for the Lute, Viol and Voice (1606).
 of Elmira will take part in a reading to benefit hunger relief organizations in the mid-Willamette Valley at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Majestic Theater in Corvallis. Also reading: Alison Clement, Margarita Donnelly, Tracy Daugherty, Kathleen Tyau, Anita Sullivan and Donna Henderson.

Called "The Magic Barrel: A reading to Fight Hunger Fight Hunger is a global initiative, based in Rome, Italy [1], calling for the end of child hunger by 2015 [2]. It is organised by the World Food Programme and its partners, and comprises different activities throughout the year. ," the event also will include live music, free food and autographed books for sale. Donations of $5 and up are suggested, but no one will be turned away. All proceeds will go to Linn-Benton Food Share.

AWARDS & GRANTS

"OREGON PILGRIMAGE IN GREEN: A FOREST JOURNAL FOR MY BROTHER," produced by the Knight Library Press, has been awarded first place in the category of Fine Press Books in the 2002 Northwest Bookfest Arts Exhibition. Sandy Tilcock, director of the Knight Library Press, was the book's designer, printer and binder. She accepted the award on Oct. 18 in Seattle. The book is a work of art and literature created by writer Kim Stafford, artist Voorhies Thompson and Tilcock.
