Author misses out.


North-east author David Almond last night missed out on winning the prestigious Whitbread Book of The Year award.

The award was won by Mark Haddon for his novel The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time, a tale of a 15-year-old-boy with Asperger's syndrome As·per·ger's syndrome

Mr Almond's novel The Fire-Eaters won the Whitbread Children's Book Award, worth pounds 5,000, having also won the Nestle Smarties Book Prize last month.

Mast bid

A BID to erect a 16-metre mobile phone mast designed to look like a tree on a site off the A1 goes before Gateshead councillors today.

T-Mobile wants to site the mast in a field and would, say planners, be "highly visible" from the A1. They are recommending refusal.
