Hargadon has spent more than a decade researching innovation management and the role of design in managing technology transitions, including how they are applied to the development and commercialization of sustainable technologies. His work has been used by organizations such as Hewlett-Packard, Canadian Health Services health services Managed care The benefits covered under a health contract , the U.S. Navy and several startups. Hargadon also is an associate professor of corporate executive programs on technology management at the Graduate School of Management at UC Davis and serves on the advisory boards of several startup companies.

Prior to founding the UC Davis Center Davis Center is a building in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, which features numerous shops and services. The Greensburg branch of the Pennsylvania Drivers License Center is located in the building. It was originally a Sears, Roebuck and Co.  for Entrepreneurship, Hargadon taught in the Product Design Program at Stanford University Stanford University, at Stanford, Calif.; coeducational; chartered 1885, opened 1891 as Leland Stanford Junior Univ. (still the legal name). The original campus was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. David Starr Jordan was its first president.  and worked as a product design engineer and project leader for Apple Inc. At Apple, he served on the design team for the Macintosh and PowerBook products.
