This guidebook provides information for those who want to understand the concept of authentic assessment Authentic assessment is an umbrella concept that refers to the measurement of "intellectual accomplishments that are worthwhile, significant, and meaningful,"[1] as compared to multiple choice standardized tests.  and who need information quickly. The authors present the information in an easy-to-read format, and it is intended to be a reference for further resources.

The book is divided into five chapters and compares traditional testing practices to authentic assessment. The authors discuss implementing authentic assessment programs; define the roles of teachers, parents, and students; and provide suggestions for principals in the implementation process.

One weakness is the chapter dealing with parent involvement. The authors assume all parents are willing to respond to school officials concerning their children's strengths, weaknesses, and future aspirations. More suggestions and examples of involvement with parents would enhance its usefulness.
