Australian soldier killed in Afghanistan

"Today our nation mourns the loss of a fine soldier," he told reporters, adding that no more information would be released because it could jeopardise the safety of other soldiers.

The soldier is the seventh Australian to have been killed in Afghanistan, where Canberra has about 1,000 troops, up to 300 of whom are special forces stationed in Uruzgan province.

Nine Australian soldiers were injured in September in an ambush in Uruzgan -- the worst casualty toll suffered by the Australian Defence Force in combat since the Vietnam War Vietnam War, conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam. .

A total of about 70,000 international troops are in Afghanistan helping the government fight the rebels.
