Australian Patent Office Grants Geron's Nuclear Transfer Patents Following Withdrawal of Oppositions.

Geron Corporation (Nasdaq:GERN v. t. 1. To grin or yawn. ) announced today that the Australian Patent Office has granted two patents for the fundamental nuclear transfer technology that was first invented at the Roslin Institute and is now used worldwide for the cloning of animals. Geron holds exclusive rights to this technology for a broad range of commercial applications and has licensed the patents to a number of companies involved in animal cloning.

The two new patents -- 716956 and 728809 -- were first approved for grant by the Australian Patent Office in 2000. Under Australian law, other parties can challenge the grant of a patent through an opposition procedure. In this instance, both patents were challenged by Monash University Facilities in are diverse and vary in services offered. However, one opposition was withdrawn after Geron and Roslin filed evidence rebutting arguments made by the opponents, and the second was withdrawn shortly thereafter.

Patents have now been issued in several jurisdictions, including the U.S., the U.K., Europe, New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland. , South Africa, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Geron is a biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing, and commercializing therapeutic and diagnostic products for applications in oncology and regenerative medicine, and research tools for drug discovery.
