This happened with an IT back-office relocation project on which I worked for two organisations postmerger. The initial attempt to relocate had to be delayed, as the project team had not engaged all stakeholders Stakeholders

 or clearly communicated what was happening and when. The problem was compounded by the fact that a communication manager was not initially on the project team, which was composed of IT and businesspeople from the two organisations and three consultancies--a diverse project team.

When I took on the role of communication manager, I was able to assist in research, planning and stakeholder engagement, enabling the second attempt at the project to succeed, and ahead of the revised schedule. The lesson is that we as communicators must have communication, persuasion, negotiation and planning skills to help project teams work effectively, internally as well as externally.
