Software License Agreements Present Major Compliance Challenges
What: Scott & Scott, (http://www.bsadefense.com), in
partnership with The Austin Bar Association, will host a
seminar entitled, "Successfully Defending Software Audits"
Why: According to Gartner, 40 percent of mid-sized to large
enterprises can expect an external software-licensing audit
before 2006. In other words, almost half of the
medium-to-large businesses in Austin, and around the country,
can expect an organization like the Business Software Alliance
(BSA), the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA),
or a software publisher itself (e.g. Microsoft, Adobe and
Autodesk), to come knocking on its door to find out if it has
purchased enough software for its employees. Fines for
copyright infringement can be stiff. Damage to the company's
brand can be extremely detrimental.
Who: IT professionals, in-house attorneys, and lawyers that
consult about legal and IT issues, will gain a greater
understanding of:
-- How to compile audit information including software
installation information and proofs of purchase
-- How to properly characterize software use as it relates to
software licenses
-- How to preserve the attorney work-product and
attorney-client privileges throughout the audit process
-- The contract and copyright laws related to software audits
-- How financial fines are calculated in software audits
When: October 4th, 12:00 pm
Where: Louie's 106, 106 East 6th Street
Austin, Texas
