If approved in the November election, Proposition 15 will establish the Cancer Research and Prevention Institute of Texas and make a $300 million investment each year over 10 years for a total of $3 billion, the single largest state-level investment on record. "Cancer affects everyone," said Lance Armstrong, founder and chairman of the LAF. "Every day, 1,500 Americans lose their lives to cancer yet federal funding to help fight this disease is declining. We can't wait for Washington. The Austin LIVESTRONG Challenge weekend offers Texans a chance to take action in the fight against cancer and support Proposition 15, our best chance to save lives both in this state and throughout our nation."

Challenge participants can choose to walk or run in the community 5K on October 13 or bike 10, 40, 60 or 90 miles on October 14, while showing their support for the cancer fight. The combined walk/run allows individuals of all fitness levels to participate. In addition to walking, running and riding, the LAF encourages members of the community to volunteer and cheer on participants during the event.

To date, the LAF has contributed more than $3.7 million in Texas to support programs and research that will help end the needless death and suffering caused by cancer.

This year marks the 11th anniversary of the LIVESTRONG Challenge, originally called Ride for the Roses. Since the first ride in 1997, tens of thousands of participants have raised more than $39 million through Challenge events in Austin and other U.S. cities.

Each Challenge participant is required to pay a $50 registration fee. There is an additional $250 fundraising minimum for cyclists, but no further fundraising requirement for walkers and runners, though everyone is encouraged to raise funds. Participants can choose to register individually or with a team. LAF provides support to Challenge participants through mentor Mentor, in Greek mythology
