Austin Entrepreneurs to be Featured in National Town Hall On Internet Taxation and Workforce Shortages.

Entrepreneurs to discuss the future of small business in the digital age and view the Presidential debate with leaders from Fortune

Exploring the economic benefits of the Internet and discussing national e-commerce issues of importance to small business will be the focus of an Oct. 11th town hall being sponsored and nationally Web cast by American Express American Express (NYSE: AXP), sometimes known as "AmEx" or "Amex", is a diversified global financial services company, headquartered in New York City. The company is best known for its credit card, charge card and traveler's cheque businesses.  Small Business Services.

Eighty five percent of small business owners are using the Internet in one form or another to manage and grow their business, forty percent are using it to buy goods, and 23 percent are using the Internet to sell their products.(a)

"At this town hall, we're trying to understand what small businesses need to do to leverage and adapt to the Internet," said Jim Blann, Senior Vice President, American Express Small Business Services. "It only made sense to hold this discussion in a technology center such as Austin where small business owners can learn from each other and develop solutions to meet the challenges and opportunities presented by the Internet."

"The Internet presents a tremendous opportunity for small businesses," said Tom Meredith, managing director of Dell Ventures, Dell's venture capital arm. "But, there is another edge to this sword of opportunity. Small businesses are particularly vulnerable to issues such as the skilled labor shortage A Labor shortage is an economic condition in which there are insufficient qualified candidates (employees) to fill the market-place demands for employment at any price. This condition is sometimes referred to by Economists as "an insufficiency in the labor force. , healthcare costs and the ability to absorb the increasing pace of technological change. Getting the fundamentals right will be key to the survival of any small firm in the Internet era."

The panel will field questions from a live audience as well as questions submitted in advance via e-mail. The forum begins at 6:30 p.m. CT and is open to the public. Those who cannot attend can submit questions and comments in advance via e-mail and can watch the live Web cast at (www.americanexpress.com/voices).

Following the panel discussion, audience members will remain and view the presidential debate on television monitors. This forum will offer a unique focus-group style look at small business owner's opinions of the presidential candidates.
