Aurora Biosciences Announces Compound Screening Agreement with ArQule.LA JOLLA La Jolla (lə hoi`yə), on the Pacific Ocean, S Calif., an uninc. district within the confines of San Diego; founded 1869. The beautiful ocean beaches, in particular La Jolla shores and Black's Beach, and sea-washed caves attract visitors and , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 1996--Aurora Biosciences Corporation today announced that ArQule, Inc. will provide its Mapping Array(TM) sets of small organic compounds for new lead generation in Aurora's drug discovery screening systems. Any successful hits identified in Aurora's screens would be developed in a joint research collaboration. ArQule's Mapping Arrays(TM) consist of many thousands of diverse small molecules individually synthesized by high-throughput modular parallel synthesis. Aurora will screen this library of small molecules against a diverse set of molecular and genomics targets using its novel fluorescence fluorescence (fl rĕs`əns), luminescence in which light of a visible color is emitted from a substance under stimulation or excitation by light or other forms of electromagnetic assays. Any successful lead compounds will then
be evaluated by a joint committee to establish an optimal plan for
further development. Aurora and ArQule will share ownership rights to
any compounds discovered, and will share any revenues upon
commercialization of the compounds.

Access to high quality libraries of chemicals designed to have `drug-like' structures (or pharmacophores) is critical in creating value by quickly finding leads with relevant activity and selectivity selectivity /se·lec·tiv·i·ty/ (se-lek-tiv´i-te) in pharmacology, the degree to which a dose of a drug produces the desired effect in relation to adverse effects. selectivity 1. for further biologic evaluation and chemical optimization. ArQule, Inc. has created a new technology platform for the discovery and production of chemical compounds with commercial potential, and is a leading provider of novel compounds to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. ArQule's proprietary modular building Modular buildings are sectional prefabricated buildings that are manufactured in a plant, and delivered to the customer in one or more complete modular sections. This happens by physical and chemical manipulations usually involving one or more reactions. and information technology to accelerate the identification and optimization of drug development candidates. Aurora Biosciences Corporation's primary mission is to advance drug discovery by developing miniaturized automated systems for ultra-high-throughput screening based on proprietary, versatile, fluorescence-based assays. These systems will enable very rapid screening of multiple genomic and other molecular targets to quickly and economically identify lead compounds with novel therapeutic potential. To date, Aurora has raised over $16.5 million in equity financing Equity Financing The act of raising money for company activities by selling common or preferred stock to individual or institutional investors. In return for the money paid, shareholders receive ownership interests in the corporation. . In 1996, the company announced collaboration with Sequana Therapeutics, for functional analysis and screening of gene targets, and Packard Instruments, to develop miniaturized systems for ultra-high-throughput screening.
