The prestigious GATF InterTech Technology Awards were created in 1978 to honor innovative technology excellence in the graphic arts graphic arts: see aquatint; drawing; drypoint; engraving; etching; illustration; linoleum block printing; lithography; mezzotint; niello; pastel; poster; silk-screen printing; silhouette; silverpoint; sketch; stencil; woodcut and wood engraving.  industry. The awards predict that the recipient technology will have a major impact on industry production and profitability. A special awards committee comprised of industry technical experts reviews the nominations and makes the selections. GATF also reports that 80% of the previous InterTech Technology Award recipients have proven commercially successful.

"The InterTech award reflects important industry recognition of the vision, innovation and pioneering effort that underlies the foundation of Augment's technological leadership in the Storage Area Networking field. We are honored that the committee selected Augment's technology for this prestigious award," said Laurence Liebson, president and chief executive officer of Augment. "The InterTech award indicates that our technology for electronic prepress production offers significant benefits for the printing industry."

Introduced in 1997, the AFX 410 Storage Server System combines cross -platform, high performance file serving with the 1 gigabit per second speed of Fibre Channel technology and the versatility of a Storage Area Network (SAN) architecture to quickly store, manage and transfer large image and text files in data intensive electronic prepress environments. Augment uniquely applies Fibre Channel technology to create a separate, high-speed link between the AFX 410 server and client workstations that "augments" existing and emerging LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  architectures. This gives Macintosh and Windows NT workstations working with large data and image files transfer rates that are significantly faster than conventional 100BaseT Ethernet networks, and greatly improves bandwidth on the LAN for the smaller file traffic it was designed to handle.

Augment Systems Inc. currently offers two product models, the AFX 410E Enterprise System and the AFX 410W Workgroup System. Each system consists of a storage server with high-speed, large capacity RAID level 3 storage, file management and access control software and Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop (hardware, standard) Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop - (FC-AL) A fast serial bus interface standard intended to replace SCSI on high-end servers.

) interface; a menu based console for administrative management and control; FC-AL hub controllers and fiber optic interconnects; and FC-AL host adapter cards and file access software for each client workstation to be connected to the storage server. The AFX410E and 410W models differ primarily in storage and client capacity.

Headquartered in Westford, MA, Augment Systems, Inc. designs, manufactures, markets and supports high performance data access and storage solutions for open, heterogeneous computing systems environments. The Company's solutions address the increasing demand for the rapid transfer and efficient storage of large image and text files within data-intensive electronic prepress, medical imaging and geographic imaging applications.
