Auditors also found that a seventh of all payroll transactions covering specialist staff and allowances contained errors - amounting to pounds 140m in all.

The findings come amid long-running criticism of equipment provision for soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

The MoD said that the pounds 6.6 billion of assets had not been "lost".

A spokesman said: "Rather, at the time of the report, DSDA were unable to satisfy the NAO's demand for paperwork.

"Improvements have been made."
