, the authors introduce the basics of strategic planning Strategic planning is an organization's process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy, including its capital and people. , describe an integrated framework for strategic planning, walk through each step of strategic planning as an audit, and provide a scoring table of each topic raised in the discussion. Many sections are helpful, but multiple passes through the same sequence become tiresome.

Selective readers will enjoy using the scoring table to test their understanding of strategic planning. They soon will recognize the authors' preferences from the letter grades they assign to each aspect of the process. District leaders will appreciate the more explicit lists of six critical factors of success and 11 common mistakes to avoid. Less selective readers may be distracted by some management examples and terminology that don't quite make it across the bridge to the educational enterprise.
