Audiotrieve, Makers of InBoxer Anti-Spam Filter, Praises, Raises Concerns About New CAN-SPAM Law.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

BOXBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 16, 2003

President George W. Bush today signed the CAN-SPAM (Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing Act of 2003) A U.S. statute effective January 1, 2004 that allows spammers to be fined up to $6 million.  ant-spam legislation into law during a White House ceremony. The law provides important tools to Federal authorities and defines what legitimate email marketers need to do.

However, Roger Matus, chief executive of Audiotrieve, makers of the leading-edge InBoxer antispam filter, believes the new law will not be enough to protect consumers and may actually increase the amount of spam E-mail that is not requested. Also known as "unsolicited commercial e-mail" (UCE), "unsolicited bulk e-mail" (UBE), "gray mail" and just plain "junk mail," the term is both a noun (the e-mail message) and a verb (to send it). .

If they abide by the rules, email marketers can send whatever they want and as much as they want. It wipes out many tougher state laws and protects mailers from law suits by individual email users."
