, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 1997--Frame Relay Access Devices (FRADs) recently introduced by ADTRAN, Inc., incorporate single-channel and quad-channel low-bit-rate voice/fax/data processors from AudioCodes Ltd. as an integral design component, the companies announced today.

AudioCodes' AC4801A-C A-C Air Conditioning  and AC4804A-C processors are the first products of their kind, and put an end to the high development costs typically required for vendors to add voiceband communications to FRADs and switches.

The two FRADs introduced by ADTRAN are the FSU FSU Florida State University

Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers.  Service Unit) and the FSU 5622 ESP (1) (Enhanced Service Provider) An organization that adds value to basic telephone service by offering such features as call-forwarding, call-detailing and protocol conversion.  (Embedded SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  Plus), the first in a family of products designed to address requests for FRADs with the reliability and customer service inherent to ADTRAN products.

"The availability of AudioCodes' processors was advantageous to the development of our Voice over Frame Relay products," said ADTRAN DDS/Frame Relay product manager Mark Amick. "The ability of these processors to add voiceband communications to frame relay devices enabled us to bring these products to market in a more timely manner."

The ADTRAN FSU series makes it easy to integrate frame relay into existing networks. The FSU series of FRADs are used for transporting multiprotocol data over frame relay networks.

"Companies such as banks and retail outlets are turning to frame relay services now that they can cut costs by combining voice and data traffic over one frame relay circuit," Amick said.

voice. The voice inputs are compressed using one of the user-selectable voice coding algorithms specified by the Frame Relay Forum in the current draft of the FRFTC Voice Over Frame Relay Implementation Agreement.

"AudioCodes welcomes ADTRAN as a user of Audiocodes' voice-enabled frame relay chips," said Shabtai Adlersberg, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of AudioCodes. "Using AudioCodes processors, these frame relay access devices will be able to compress the voice for transmission without sacrificing voice quality."

Available now, the AudioCodes processors can handle both voice and fax. Work is underway by AudioCodes to upgrade the design to include data modem relay as well. This and other upgrades will be incorporated smoothly into equipment vendors' designs due to the "soft" functionality of the chips: the new functional upgrades can be downloaded into the AC480XA-C devices by the host processor at any time.
