To be eligible to receive an award, the nominee must be an owner/founder/manager of a private or public company who is primarily responsible for the recent performance of the company (or organization) and an active member of top management. Those honored will have demonstrated excellence and extraordinary success in such areas as innovation, financial performance, and personal commitment to their businesses and communities. The program typically draws interest from companies large and small who represent the diverse range of industries resident in New Jersey.

As a leading recognition program for entrepreneurial business owners, Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur Of The Year program helps feature New Jersey as a prime state in which to establish and grow a business. Participants in the program are nominated within their professional communities by clients, prospective clients, and business associates.
